Born in captivity
Carabus auronitens festivus
Origin : France
Size : ~2cm
Temperature : 10-28°C
Reproduction : Easy, reproduction in spring (they need diapause in winter)
Food adult stage : Snail, earthworm, slug, carrion, sweet fruit, gingerbread and honey.
Nymph stage food : Snail and earthworms, slug, carrion etc...
Maintenance :A magnificent beetle! The diet is mainly composed of earthworms and snails. They need to be fed every 1-2 days. The snails can be presented thawed and crushed in a bowl, for earthworms, you can distribute them cut into small pieces in a bowl. Leftover food must be cleaned up quickly to maintain good hygiene. Nymphs need to be individualized, development time is about 45-60 days. Once adults, they live up to 3 years. Reproduction takes place in the spring, when the nymphs hatch, it is best to install them individually. Adults can project, in rare cases, an almost harmless acid (you will still have to protect your eyes, and rinse your skin in case of contact). It is important to offer them a diapause during the winter. You can also place them outdoors with a good thickness of substrate and a lot of bark, or install them in a cellar/cool room at around 10 degrees. A typical terrarium in the woods will be perfect, which you will keep slightly moist (bark, moss, dead leaves). They can live in groups once adults. They are magnificent little-known French arthropods, unfortunately not very present in our farms, yet fascinating to observe and very active.
